5 Tips on How To Master Trumpet Embouchure
Download This Practice Routine For Comeback Trumpet Players:
www.trumpetlessonshq.com/Comeback-Routine
If you have any serious goals for your trumpet playing then you will need a balanced embouchure.
Learn how to master trumpet embouchure in this video. Chris thoroughly goes over 5 tips that can help strengthen the trumpet embouchure. These tips are also great for improving flexibility on trumpet.
This is a trumpet masterclass focused on developing the trumpet embouchure and overall playing ability for all trumpet players. Chris Davis emphasizes keeping the horn to your mouth often, practicing flexibility exercises, incorporating isometrics like the Caruso method, adding pedal tones, and using 'muscle confusion' by rotating between practice routines. Action items include choosing one new embouchure-building technique to try for a month.
Chapters
Embouchure Tips for Beginner and Comeback Players
For new players, focus on keeping the horn to your mouth frequently in short 5-10 minute sessions, increasing over time. Practice long tones and chromatic scales to develop muscles and coordination. Recommended method book: Carl Gordon's 'Physical Approach to Trumpet Playing'.
Master Key of Flexibility
Flexibility is critical for all aspects of playing including endurance, range and sound production. Slurs and lip bends manipulate fine movements of the tongue and air speed to control notes. Books like Irons, Schlossberg, Bylands and Walter Smith cover flexibility.
Isometrics and the Caruso Method
Carmine Caruso's calisthenics method builds strength through exercises where the mouthpiece stays placed on the lips. Following specific rules allows faster development by reducing movements. It supplements normal routines rather than replacing them.
Adding Pedal Tones
Practicing pedal tones relaxes facial tension and promotes endurance by teaching the body to play more relaxed. Adding them at the end of slurs is an easy way to incorporate them.
Muscle Confusion Through Routine Rotation
Similar to plateau-breaking techniques in weight training, rotating between a few different practice routines every 3-6 weeks continually challenges the muscles and embouchure to spur development.
Action Items
Choose at least one new embouchure-building technique to try for a month, such as flexibility exercises, isometrics, pedal tones or muscle confusion rotation.

Great little video, thanks, Chris. Everything you said makes sense and the demonstrations were really clear. Would your method work for a former trumpet player who is trying to play cornet? I stopped playing when I was 25 and today is my 63rd birthday. I started playing cornet 2 years ago but I’m still struggling to move smoothly from G on the second line to C in the third space! Thanks Chris. Peter. PS - I’m in the UK.

Hello Chris, seeking your advice please. If you could purchase 1 of the following trumpets all for the same price and condition which would you choose please? I should also mention I have the opportunity to purchase one, however, "unplayed" due to being such a distance from them all. To be played at military funerals and special events (Australia) and for personal pleasure and then one day pass onto my children. It seems like mouthpiece one has more options for colors in the sound, option two is very centered in the pitch and has a broad sound but with less variation. Personally as an improvising trumpet player, I like mouthpieces that allow for the biggest change in color that I’m hearing in my head.

Ugh you guys make this crap too complicated with all this technical crap. Just tell me what the notes and fingerings are and give me examples of the sounds. You can keep all the rest of that burdensome technical mumbo jumbo. I cant tell you how many teachers ive dumped because they focus too much on crap and not enough on the music!! Moutpieces and clark studiy arbin crap. You dont need all of that. JUST PLAY THE FREAKIN HORN!!

I started to play my beloved trumpet 1 year ago and in this time I prepared my grade 5 exam ( from 8 grades in Australia ) in 2 month. I am working on tone, breathing control, dynamics and clearity of tone. My teacher told me,that I am playing Haydn concerto ,3rd movement next year, but I feel my tone need lot of improvement. Do you have any additional exercises to help in this matter. Thanks again ❤

Agreed it's important to listen to and sing along the chosen standard, furthermore I would add that another way to learn the harmonic movement is just to concentrate to the bass line and try to sing it, in this way you internalize the structure and the tonic of the chords. It can be an easier approach for beginners that are not confident with the piano or guitar comping.

All of this sounds pretty boring. It seems to become about the music. I've never benefitted a whole lot from a bunch of tedious routines. Ive focused on the music and music has taught me how to play the horn. Maybe thats just me, but i think with trumpet too much emphasis and time is put on all of this technical stuff. You can spend years puffing up all these "flexibilities" and other stuff and never get to the music. Im not going to spend years on lip flexibilites and constant excercises. This video unfortunately to me shows what im talking about with this obsession on this technical stuff. It was supposed to be 5 tips, but the video is almost 40 minutes long. Its too much, if i was a beginner and a teacher threw all this mess at me, I'd walk away. Too technical too many boring tedious excercises. The point is to play music. There's none of that in this. No balnce between the two.

You're mistaken. Absolute beginners on brass need foundational skills before getting to the music. For us beginners, getting to the music should simply be listening to great players and finding inspiration from them to continue practicing. Brass instruments aren't pick up and play like a guitar or piano is. Since you can pluck a string or hit a key and instantly have good tone, learning simple songs is an immediate possibility. This isn't true of the trumpet in the least. Beginners can potentially spend weeks just learning to comfortably play one single note. I'm on my first week and can't yet play the whole C Major scale, let alone with decent tone. A beginner guitarist can play several scales within a minutes of picking a guitar up. If we start learning songs and more advanced techniques like vibrato before even cementing good embouchure form, that's how we develop bad habits that'll come back to bite us. What I'm gathering from your comment is frustration. Reality is, learning is often boring, tedious and difficult before it becomes fun. That's life.

You are a true genius. I stopped playing the trumpet ten years ago for various reasons and started again a week ago. It was almost impossible for me to get a sound out of the instrument. I was totally frustrated and my head almost exploded because I was putting so much pressure on myself to produce a sound. Then I came across the video here and implemented what you showed to play without buzzing. It was so easy and I was able to produce a nice sound without much pressure. It even sounds better than it did ten years ago. I thank you for this. You now have one more subscriber. Keep it up. Many people are looking for tips like this. I recommend your channel to other brass players.
